Booking a family photography session often brings up the question: "What should I wear to look my best?" For photoshoots with more than one person, color coordination is key. This doesn't mean everyone needs to wear the exact same blue top and black jeans. Instead, the aim is to create a harmonious visual where individuals complement each other without any single person drawing all the attention.
Consider a family I once photographed who hadn't planned their outfits. Their daughter wore a bright yellow dress, while the rest were in blues and greens. Naturally, your eye is immediately drawn to the yellow. While they were happy with this, you might prefer a more balanced look.
For the best results, think in terms of similar colors. A simple approach is to choose a consistent base for bottoms, like blue or black (denim or a skirt work well). Then, select top colors that are relatively close on the color wheel. Remember that white, grey, and black are versatile neutrals that pair well with almost any color.
Keep in mind that the backdrop of your photoshoot can influence your color choices. Earth tones (like greens and blues) tend to blend beautifully with outdoor settings, while jewel tones can really pop against a studio background.
Don't shy away from subtle patterns on one person, as they can add visual interest. Just ensure the colors within the pattern coordinate with the rest of the group's attire. Also, consider that some colors complement certain skin tones better than others, which can enhance the overall look.
Above all, comfort is key. Choose outfits that everyone feels comfortable and confident wearing. Uncomfortable subjects often lead to stiff and unnatural-looking photos.
Family photography, especially those with little kids, will plan color coordination around what the kids are comfortable wearing. In any child photo session, it's best to make sure your kids are comfortable, as their expressions and attitude will reflect it.
